The Best Thanksgiving Ever!

Claire was really up for this trip to Nauvoo. She loves riding in the car and kept looking for Disneyland.
In Independence, Missouri, Abby, Patrick and Joe visited the Truman Library. Claire, Katie and I took a nap in the car.

We were so happy to get to Paul and Sarah's house in St. Louis!

We stopped to visit the campus of Westminster University. This is where Winston Churchill gave his famous talk and first used the term, "iron curtain."
There is a Christopher Wren designed church there that was moved stone by stone from London. It is officially the oldest structure in America. There is a very nice Winston Churchill museum in the basement of the church. There is also a section of the Berlin Wall.

Here is Katie in the light-filled church.

Outside of the museum.

As we gathered at the Hyrum Smith Farm and House, the grandboys got to know each other!

Joshua and Adrian get to know the horse that pulled our wagon tour of Nauvoo.

Peter gets bundled up in the quilts provided for us on our wagon ride. It was pretty cold and Peter was much happier when he was covered up!

Our Nauvoo Wagon tour was interesting.

It was pretty cold!

Outside the Printing Shop. John Taylor was the editor and George Q. Cannon was apprenticed at this shop.

Cute Patrick and Abby in the Print Shop.

At the gravesite of Joseph, Emma and Hyrum.

Jan and Joe were so happy to have all their children here. It was glorious!

Paul, Sarah, Benjamin and Peter at the graves of Hyrum and Joseph.

We did a lot of hanging out at the house. It was a very nice place and had a nice spirit. The old part of the house was very interesting.

There was a hot tub at the house. Claire was especially excited about it.

Anne, Josh and Adrian enjoyed the tub.

Claire had a little stash of her favorite foods under her bed.

Thanksgiving Dinner. Not too fancy, but everyone chipped in and it was pretty delicious. We had all the traditional foods, plus some wonderful yams and apples made by Anne, yummy rolls by Sarah and special desserts put together by Alexandra.

Thanksgiving Dinner

We all met for this picture on Friday. It isn't artistically perfect, but I love it! All the people I love most in the world were together. Just following this, the married couples all went on a session and afterwards did sealings for some ancestors. My grandmother Nielsen's grandfather William Wommock Riley's cousins. It was really wonderful. Michael and Katie took care of all the kids.

Brigham, Alexandra, Andrew and William at the temple. They announced that they will be having another boy in April. We are all excited. Their boys are great!

Silly Grandpa! Patrick and Abby brought some nerf guns that we the biggest hit for the boys.

Katie, Abby and Patrick goof around in front of the house as we get ready to depart
Paul, Sarah and boys on the porch of the house. You can see the old brick. Paul and Sarah announced that they will be having another baby in the summer. Hoorah!

A portrail of Hyrum in the house. The people that renovated the house did a great job of spotlighting Hyrum and the history of the house.

Katie in front of the house. There was a nice city park across the street and if the weather had been warmer, we could have used it more.

On the way back to St. Louis we stopped at Carthage. Paul and Peter as seen from the jail window.
We attended church with Paul and Sarah on Sunday. They are well-regarded in their ward and it was lovely to be there with them, then we headed back to Utah. It was cold, but we had clear weather for the return trip. Everyone made it home safely and it was a perfect Thanksgiving!

Autumn Days and Nights!

Katie and I took Claire to the Scarecrow Festival at Thanksgiving Point. It was a huge event mostly for 3-10 year olds. It was difficult for Claire to climb up the inflatibles, but Katie helped her and she had a mixed reaction to the ride down!

She refused to go into the haunted house but liked blowing bubbles from the witches' caldron.

On October 29th, we hosted a dinner for 30 people. I could not have done it without my crew of professional servers; Louisa, Liz, Katie Crosby and my Katie. I can't believe how grown up they all are!

Claire really got into Halloween this year. She loved giving out candy at the door and when Katie and Abby took her trick or treating, she wanted to keep going. It was fun having Abby and Patrick down for the evening, too! We had over 350 trick or treaters and ran out of candy about 8:30, turned out all the lights and moved upstairs.

Here are our girls, Vampire Abby, Ladybug Claire and Tyranosaurus Rex Kate

Katie had to be careful not to "wrecks" too much with her swooshy tail. It also reminded me of Michael's joke, "Why are Tyranosaurus Rex's so grumpy?" "Because they can't give anyone a hug!"

Omagle Races - July 2009

What fun!

10 K Race

On the 24th of July, Katie, Paul, Josh, Anne (and Adrian), Brigham and Alexandra all completed the Deseret News 10K race in Salt Lake City. What an accomplishment! I am so proud of them all.

Summer with Adrian (and Josh and Anne)

We were happy to have Josh and Anne and Adrian live with us from May until August. Josh commuted with Joe to Salt Lake every day to clerk at the law firm of VanCott. It was a win for everyone, even me, because Joe needed to come home earlier!
Josh and Anne took Adrian on lots of adventures. Like this one where Anne was waiting for her turn to...

do this. What craziness!

Most of the time, however, they would just go for a walk up Rock Canyon and enjoy playing in the creek. Adrian loved it!

Josh and Anne loved to cook nutritious meals -- humongous salads. When Josh wasn't helping, he was entertaining!

It was wonderful to have them with us, especially to see Adrian grow from a crawling baby to a walking toddler.

How could you not pick up this child?

See you next summer Adrian!

Hanging out at the Homestead

July was a busy month as the family gathered and we prepared for Abby and Patrick's wedding. There was some down time, however, to just have a relaxing good time!

Here Grandpa and Andrew are launching a rocket!

Adrian actually turned one in June, but I don't know how to delete this photo. Anne made him a darling bear cake!

Benjamin and Andrew cool off in the kid's pool.

Provo Canyon was a fun place for Andrew and William to chill.

Peter got to explore Momo's house and get acquainted with Brigham Young.

Andrew and Grandpa worked together on the glider.

Rub a Dub Dub -- Three boys in the tub!

Claire liked the little pool, and so did Adrian until Claire dumped a pitcher of water on his head!
